GitHub Action that enables you to keep a file in Repository A
and copy it over, update or remove it from Repository N
.
It is useful for use cases like:
- you have a GitHub Actions workflow files that are the same for every repo and you want to edit it only once and then see change in all the other repositories
- you have a
CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md
orCONTRIBUTING.md
file that you want to have in the same form in all the repositories. You want to edit it in one repo and then have the change replicated in other repositories - you have a file that has to be removed from multiple repositories
- This fork does not use clone&push strategy, rather it uses Github API to do all the operations, therefore it's more appropriate for large number or target repositories and lower number of changed files.
- Commiter is always the same as the user owning the token.
If you used Copy Files to Other Repositories
action before it became Manage Files in Multiple Repositories
the only breaking change that you need to be aware of, except new features, is that now this action is also able to pick up deletions. In other words, imagine a situation where patterns_to_include
has value ./github/workflows/another_file.yml
. The new version of action not only will pick up modifications of another_file.yml
but also if you remove that file, this action will pick that info up and also remove the file in other repositories that have it, respecting destination
field.

In AsyncAPI we have over 50 repositories. We use GitHub Actions at scale. Many workflows are exactly the same. We keep all workflows in .github. This action replicates all changes to workflows to all the other repos.
Use case mentione above was first. Then more folks started using this action. So this action evolved to support any file modifications, not only workflows.
This action can be triggered by:

push event and only files that were changed in the commit are replicated to other repositories.

workflow_dispatch event and then all files from workflow directory (except of ignored ones) are replicated to other repositories. Use case for this event is when you create new repositories in your organization that need to push standard files to it. Then you can manually trigger the action and all files will be updated in all repositories. Below screen shots shows how manual triggering works.
This action also allows you to specify a single repository that action should run against. You can add the following input trigger in your workflow:

As a result you will be able to run your workflow manually by providing specific repository name. If name is not provided, action will fallback to run against all repositores. If wrong repo name is provided under
repo_name
, the action will fail.

bot_branch_name | Use it if you do not want this action to create a new branch and new pull request with every run. By default branch names are generated. This means every single change is a separate commit. Such a static hardcoded branch name has an advantage that if you make a lot of changes, instead of having 5 PRs merged with 5 commits, you get one PR that is updated with new changes as long as the PR is not yet merged. If you use static name, and by mistake someone closed a PR, without merging and removing branch, this action will not fail but update the branch and open a new PR.
