typing "make check" in the root directory now runs all of the C and Fortran unit tests
all C unit tests now return 0 on success
added some basic checks, e.g. that required png, pdf and svg file outputs exist
implemented GitHub actions workflow to run even graphical tests automatically, pressing Enter when required
