Initial public release for FOSS

Whichever criteria we determine for production-worthiness or v1.0 status, it would be awfully presumptuous to claim the very first release is it. Perhaps we can skip through minor point releases to a 1.0, but let's get feedback from at least one more qualified developer before doing so.
