What: A list of Trusted Research Environments throughout Europe, that are commonly in use by social scientists in Europe.
What is an awesome list?
A Trusted Research Environment (TRE) is a virtual machine on which a researcher can perform analyses on sensitive data, but the data cannot leave the environment without explicit approval by the data holder. This leaves the data holder in complete control of the data, facilitating GDPR compliance. The data may be sensitive because of privacy, copyright or commercial reasons. The concept is used a lot in the social sciences. Many data holders provide their own TRE, although some TREs are data holder-agnostic.
If you wish to contribute, please check the contribution guidelines or get in touch with Lucas van der Meer.
Acknowledgments: This work is inspired by ODISSEI's Awesome Ontologies for Social Sciences & CLARIAH's Awesome Ontologies for Digital Humanities. An earlier version of this list was created as part of a HORIZON-INFRA-2023-EOSC-01 proposal, called TruSSD (Trust in Sharing Sensitive Data). The proposal intended to create a federated, transdisciplinary, and transnational ecosystem of TREs. After rejection of the proposal, ODISSEI (the Dutch national infrastructure for the social sciences), published the list and keeps updating it.
