Janeway has 9 roles:

  • Author
  • Copyeditor
  • Editor
  • Production Manager
  • Proofing Manager
  • Reviewer
  • Section Editor
  • Typesetter

Author

The Author role allows users to submit articles and is assigned to all users automatically. It forces the display of the Articles listing on the Dashboard.

Copyeditor

The Copyeditor role is used singly for the copyediting stage. Users will see the Copyeditor block on the Dashboard and can be invited to Copyedit articles with this role.

Editor

Editor is an amalgamation of older Manager/Editor roles. The Editor has wide ranging permissions to set settings on the journal and also has access to all stages across the journal even when they are not assigned directly to an article.

Production Manager

The Production Manager is an assigned role that allows a user to undertake the Production stage on behalf of the Editor. This is useful if a journal uses an external organisation to run their production as the Editor can hand the article over and receive it back once production is complete.

Proofing Manager

The Proofing Manager role is usually one that a user has in tandem with the Production Manger role as they are usually tasks undertaken by the same person (Proofing is simply checking that Production is adequate and often requires the Proofing Manager request changes to produced Galleys).

Proofreader

Alongside Authors of the article, the other people who can be assigned to Proofread an article are Proofreaders.

Section Editor

A Section Editor can be assigned to one or more Sections. Once an editor is assigned to a section they are then available for selection as the handling editor for a given article.

Typesetter

A typesetter can be assigned to undertake production tasks by the Production and Proofing managers of a given article in the event that Typesetting is undertaken either externally or by a person other than the Production/Proofing manager. They can also be asked to make corrections in the Proofing stage.
