Microphone Recommendations

Built in laptop microphones and gaming headsets can get you started with voice typing, but in the long term, you're going to want to spend at least $100 to $200 to get something decent. While this is a decent amount of money, this is the only part of voice typing that costs money and in a long term it will definitely be worth it if you're using it a lot. A good microphone can also be used for other things too. Another way to look at it is that a good microphone for voice typing is like getting a good keyboard for regular typing, and good keyboards usually start at around $100 to $200. This may also be a good opportunity to see if any other part of your computer setup could be improved and made more ergonomic, like the chair or desk.

One thing to note about microphones is that there are different types of plugs for them. Lower end microphones usually use either 3.5mm headphone jack or USB, but upper end microphones usually use XLR due to the improved sound quality. XLR microphones require a USB adapter to work with computers which range in quality and can be a bit expensive, though a good adapter does make a difference.
