Welcome to the Project Ethea i18n Repository!

This repository contains the translation toolchain and language catalogues used for the Project Ethea add-ons for The Battle for Wesnoth — at the moment, they are Invasion from the Unknown, After the Storm, and the shared utility library used by both, Naia.

If you are here you presumably are interested in translating these Wesnoth add-ons to your native language. This document attempts to explain everything you need to know to start or take over a translation.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with mainline translation tools and practices. See WesnothTranslations on the Wesnoth.org wiki for more information.
  • Optimally, you should be part of the mainline translation team for your language, but this is not mandatory.
  • A good grasp of English as well as your target language. Text in IftU and AtS is extremely nuanced, and while the catalogues (usually) include annotations for translators where they might be essential, there are many lines that are deliberately vague in meaning.
  • A good understanding of the campaigns' plot, and ideally their gameplay as well. Especially in the second half of IftU and in AtS, there are many non-visual cues indicating the mood of a scene or a line as spoken by the characters. Translating these campaigns before playing them at least once WILL most certainly ruin your enjoyment of the story forever (and if you are not interested in them then you probably shouldn't be here).

Note: Due to the shared nature of Naia, many strings in IftU and AtS actually come from it. If you are taking over a translation, you must translate Naia to your language before the campaigns themselves. Likewise, before translating AtS it is recommended that you have already translated IftU in order to get familiarized with some of the terms and names used in it.

Steps to Follow

  1. Make sure no-one in your translation team (if applicable) is already translating the add-on.
  2. Grab the translation catalogue .po file for your language (e.g. fr.po for French) from the repository's file tree under the respective directory (Invasion_from_the_Unknown, After_the_Storm, or Naia). If none such exists yet, you will need to work with the .pot template catalogue instead.
  3. File an issue on this repository specifying which add-on(s) and language you are submitting translations for. You can post your work-in-progress .po catalogues (not the compiled .mo files) as long as the updates are substantial in size. Do not close your issue ticket.
  4. Only translations which have Naia translated at 100% percent will be accepted.

That should hopefully be all you need to know to get started. As always, you're more than welcome to ask questions in the forum threads for both campaigns if you have any doubts about the process or about specific strings in the translation catalogues:

Have fun and thank you for your contributions! 💜
