  • Purpose: Sets up resources for deploying Automate in Azure.
  • Key Components:
    • Resource group for Automate.
    • Virtual network interface for Automate instances.
    • Dependency on Chef VM, indicating integration with Chef setup.

2. chef.tf

  • Purpose: Contains configurations specific to the Chef environment.
  • Key Components:
    • Resource group for Chef.
    • Virtual network interface for Chef instances.

3. provider.tf

  • Purpose: Configures the Terraform backend and Azure provider.
  • Key Components:
    • Terraform state configuration with Azure storage account details.
    • Required Azure provider settings, including subscription and client details.

4. runner.tf

  • Purpose: Manages resources for deployment of runners, which could be used for various automation tasks.
  • Key Components:
    • Resource group for runners.
    • Virtual network interface for runner instances.
    • Dependency on Automate VM, suggesting a relationship with the Automate setup.

5. variables.tf

  • Purpose: Defines variables used across the Terraform configuration.
  • Key Components:
    • General Azure settings like location and subnet ID.
    • Specific variables for Chef and Automate environments, including server settings.

Prerequisites

  • An Azure account with appropriate permissions.
  • Terraform installed and configured on your system.
  • Familiarity with Azure services and Terraform syntax.

Usage

  1. Initialization: Run terraform init to initialize the Terraform environment.
  2. Configuration: Update the variables in variables.tf as per your Azure environment and requirements.
  3. Planning: Execute terraform plan to review the proposed changes.
  4. Deployment: Apply the configuration using terraform apply.

Security Considerations

  • Ensure that access keys and credentials are securely managed.
  • Review and apply Azure security best practices, especially for network and resource access.

Maintenance

  • Regularly update the Terraform files to reflect any changes in Azure services or your infrastructure needs.
  • Keep Terraform version updated to the latest stable release.
