Code matching arxiv 2212.01232

This release version is the code and results that led up to the arxiv preprint https://arxiv.org/pdf/2212.01232.pdf published 5 December 2022. It includes all the code and the core results files that were used to generate the figures in the paper (excluding some larger files, e.g. in test_average_xentropy) that can be re-generated in short runs.

UPDATE 2024-03-13: The results files have been removed from the repo permanently and will be published elsewhere in a place appropriate for large data files.

Unpruned development before publication

This is the first release and is a version where all methods that were tried are still included. After this, commented code and unsuccessful methods will be pruned to make a more clean code base underlying forthcoming publication.
