Following the success of the Salyut programme, the Mir space station was assembled and operated in low orbit for 15 years. Proton-K was used to launch all modules except for the docking module, which was installed by US Space Shuttle STS-74.

1 Mir Core Module

The base block, or DOS-7, provides the main living quarters and docking nodes for the four expansion modules.

2 Mir Kvant-1

The first expansion module, Kvant-1 includes an experiment module and life support systems.

3 Mir Kvant-2

Kvant-2 is the first TKS based module and houses additional life support and scientific systems.

4 Mir Kristall

The fourth module is used for material processing and also has a docking compartment designed for use with the Buran shuttle. A docking module is added later to provide sufficient clearance for the US Space Shuttle.

5 Mir Spektr

Launched as part of the Shuttle-Mir programme, Spektr serves as living quarters for visitors.

6 Mir Priroda

The seventh and final module, Priroda's main purpose is remote sensor experiments.
