First Generation

Salyut Dolgovremennaya Orbitalnaya Stanziya (Long term orbital station) were crewed scientific research platforms. Salyut was also used as a cover for the highly secretive Almaz-OPS military station launches. Salyut 1 (DOS-1) was the first station to orbit and remained in space for 175 days. It was successfully visited by a crewed Soyuz 7K-OK. Salyut 4 (DOS-4) was successfully visited by both crewed and unmanned Soyuz 7K-T, proving the longevity of the systems in space.

Second Generation

Salyut 6 (DOS-5) featured a second aft docking port allowing Progress 7K-TG resupply craft to dock whilst keeping the Soyuz 7K-T and later Soyuz-T docked to the front. After crewed operation were discontinued, an unmanned TKS spacecraft was permanently docked to the station. The VA return capsule was separated and de-orbited. Salyut 7 (DOS-6) was outwardly similar to DOS-5. Various crew and modules were used over its 9 year lifetime, including Soyuz-T, Progress 7K-TG and TKS spacecraft.

Third Generation

DOS-7 and DOS-8 were equipped with docking sphere on the front that mounted multiple docking ports to allow for modular space station builds. Neither received Salyut designations as DOS-7 became the Mir Core Module and DOS-8 was used as the Zvezda Service Module on ISS.
