Derived from the R-7 Semyorka ICBM, the working parts of this Soviet (and latterly Russian) family of launchers are referred to as "Bloks". The basic architecture of the R-7 consists of the Blok-A core stage powered by an RD-108 engine and four liquid fuel boosters (Blok-B, V, G, D) powered by RD-107 engines. The first launch vehicle, designated 8K71PS, placed the first Sputnik satellite in orbit in 1957.
