Emulation is a dizzying array of file extensions and file formats. This hopefully clears up some of it:

tar tape archive format, used to group files for backups or downloading in UNIX/Linux
bz2 compressed files(s), uncommon format
sit StuffIt compressed file(s), usually need a mac to create or decompress
ips binary patch file
wad DOOM custom files/levels
001 part01 r01 split files
par par2 parity files for recovering from partial downloads, particularly in usenet
